There’s something about the smell of cinnamon, cloves, and citrus drifting through the air that makes you feel instantly festive. Mulled wine isn’t just a drink, it’s a tradition that warms your hands and your heart. While most people think of it as a steaming winter drink, in warmer Christmas destinations like Australia or South Africa, you’ll also find chilled versions such as Mulled Wine on the Rocks which is proof that this spiced, fragrant beverage works in any climate. Whether you’re curled up by the fire or hosting a sunny patio party, mulled wine is the perfect way to celebrate the season.

What is Mulled Wine?

Mulled wine is red wine gently heated with spices, citrus, and sometimes sweeteners like honey or sugar. It’s been enjoyed for centuries across Europe, especially in countries like Germany, the UK, France, and Nordic regions. Today, it’s a beloved drink at Christmas markets and holiday gatherings worldwide.

How to Make Classic Mulled Wine

1 orange, sliced

4 cinnamon sticks

4–6 whole cloves

¼ cup honey or sugar (adjust to taste)

½ cup brandy (optional)

Instructions

Taste and adjust sweetness or spice.

Serve in mugs, garnished with orange slices or a cinnamon stick.

How to Store Mulled Wine

Mulled wine can be made ahead or saved for later. In fact, the flavors often deepen after a day or two. Here’s how to keep it fresh and delicious:

For the Refrigerator

Cool completely before storing. Pour the mulled wine into a glass jar or airtight container.

Keep for up to 3 days in the fridge.

Reheat gently on the stove over low heat or in the microwave in short bursts to avoid boiling off the alcohol.

For the Freezer

Yes, you can freeze it! Just note the texture and flavor may change slightly.

Store in a freezer-safe container with at least 1 inch of headspace for expansion.

Thaw in the refrigerator overnight, then reheat gently before serving.

Variations to Try

Apple Mulled Wine- Add apple cider for a sweeter, fruitier twist.

White Mulled Wine- Swap red wine for a dry white like Sauvignon Blanc; add cardamom for brightness.

Berry Mulled Wine- Toss in fresh cranberries and a splash of cranberry juice.

Spiced Tea Mulled Wine- Steep chai tea bags in the wine for extra warmth and depth.

Anise-Kissed Mulled Wine- Add 1–2 star anise pods along with the cinnamon and cloves for a warm licorice note; remove after 15–20 minutes so it doesn’t overpower.

Mulled Wine on the Rocks- Make the classic recipe, let it cool, then strain and serve over ice with an orange slice. Perfect for warmer climates or holiday gatherings where you want something refreshing yet still spiced.

Non-Alcoholic Mulled Wine- Use grape juice or cranberry juice instead of wine; still delicious and family-friendly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make mulled wine ahead of time?
Yes! You can prepare it a few hours in advance and keep it warm in a slow cooker on the “keep warm” setting.

Does the alcohol cook off?
Not completely. Warming reduces the alcohol slightly, but it will still have some content unless you use a non-alcoholic base.

What’s the best wine for mulled wine?
Choose an affordable, fruity red. You don’t need an expensive bottle since the spices will dominate the flavor.

Can I reuse the spices?
It’s best to use fresh spices each time for the richest flavor.

From bustling Christmas markets in Germany to cozy kitchens around the world, mulled wine is a holiday tradition that brings people together. Make it your own with favorite spices, share it with friends, and let that first warm sip remind you why this centuries-old drink never goes out of style.

Experiment with different toppings and mix-ins, like crushed candy canes, marshmallows, or even a drizzle of your favorite liqueur for an adult twist.

For a fun presentation, serve in chilled mugs or glasses rimmed with chocolate syrup or crushed cookies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use instant hot chocolate mix instead of cocoa powder?

Yes, you can use instant hot chocolate mix. Simply replace the cocoa powder and sugar with an equivalent amount of hot chocolate mix. Keep in mind that instant mixes may already contain sugar and other additives, so you may need to adjust the sweetness accordingly.

Can I use milk alternatives like almond or oat milk?

Absolutely! While the traditional recipe calls for dairy milk and cream, you can easily substitute your preferred non-dairy milk alternative for a vegan or lactose-free version.

How long does frozen hot chocolate keep?

Due to its frozen nature it can typically be stored in the freezer for up to a week. Just be sure to give it a good stir or blend before serving to re-incorporate any separated ingredients.

Whether you’re a lifelong fan of hot chocolate or a newcomer to this chilled version, frozen hot chocolate is sure to become a beloved addition to your winter indulgences. So cozy up, grab a spoon, and prepare to savor the rich, velvety flavors of this decadent treat.

Whether you’re hosting a festive dinner party or a cozy night in with loved ones, this delicious wintertime cocktail adds a touch of sophistication to any setting. The Espresso Martini recipe that follows is easy to make and includes many variations.

This relatively modern cocktail first graced the scene in the 1980’s.
Tips and Hints

Chill Your Glassware- Before preparing your Espresso Martini, pop your martini glasses into the freezer. A frosty glass enhances the drinking experience, keeping your cocktail cooler for longer.

Invest in Quality Ingredients- The simplicity of the Espresso Martini highlights the importance of using high-quality ingredients. Freshly brewed coffee, top-shelf vodka, and a premium coffee liqueur contribute to a superior cocktail.

Shake with Vigor- Achieving the perfect frothiness in your Espresso Martini requires a good shake. Shake the mixture vigorously for at least 10-15 seconds to create a luxurious and velvety texture.

Garnish Creatively- Elevate the presentation by garnishing your Espresso Martini with coffee beans, a twist of orange peel, or a sprinkle of cocoa powder. These small details add a visual and aromatic appeal to your drink.

Serve Immediately- Espresso Martinis are best enjoyed fresh. Serve your concoction immediately after shaking to savor the full, robust flavors and the delightful frothy top.

Storing Vodka- Store your vodka in the freezer so it’s icy cold when making drinks.

Frequently Asked Questions

What vodka is best for an Espresso Martini?

A premium vodka like Grey Goose or Absolut works well. Avoid bottom-shelf vodkas.

What if I don’t have a cocktail shaker?

You can mix in a jar and strain into glasses. Just be sure to shake very well.

What other coffee liqueurs can I use?

Kahlua is common, but you can sub in Baileys Irish Cream or other coffee-flavored liqueurs.

How do I make the foam topping?

Shake vigorously and fine strain for naturally frothy foam. Some add cream but this dulls the espresso flavor.

What glass should I serve it in?

A classic martini glass is traditional, but a cocktail or coupe glass also works well.

Whether you’re a coffee enthusiast or a cocktail connoisseur, the Espresso Martini is a holiday delight that brings together the best of both worlds. Experiment with the variations, share the joy with friends and family, and toast to the season with this decadent, caffeinated creation.

On cold blustery days there’s nothing quite as comforting as wrapping your hands around a steaming mug of London Fog – the classic Earl Grey tea latte. This delicately floral, subtly sweet hot drink is easy to make and utterly soothing. The London Fog is more than a hot beverage; it’s a bright spot for any gray day!

What Exactly is a London Fog?

A London Fog is a caffeinated tea-based drink made by steeping Earl Grey tea and vanilla syrup in hot milk or water. The end result is a creamy, aromatic latte that tastes just a little bit floral and sweet.

A Canadian Creation

Contrary to its name, the London Fog did not originate in the bustling streets of London but rather in the cozy cafes of Vancouver, Canada. The drink is believed to have been created in the 1990s, gaining popularity for its comforting appeal in the face of the city’s frequent rain and mist. A regular customer named Mary Loria, who was pregnant at the time and not drinking coffee, asked the cafe to make her a different hot drink. She requested they make a regular black tea and add in steamed milk, vanilla, and sugar.

Inspired by the desire to create a comforting and elegant beverage, it quickly became a favorite in coffee shops and tea houses across Canada. Its popularity eventually spread to other parts of the world, earning its place as a beloved hot drink on café menus globally.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make it caffeine-free?

Yes! Use decaffeinated Earl Grey tea instead of regular Earl Grey. Decaf Earl Grey will provide the bergamot flavor without the caffeine.

Can you make it dairy-free?

Absolutely. Simply use water warmed just below boiling instead of heated milk. Add a little extra vanilla to make up for the missing creamy texture.

Is it only made with Earl Grey tea?

While the classic version is made with Earl Grey tea, some variations may use other tea blends as a base. However, the distinctive flavor of Earl Grey remains synonymous with the traditional version.

Can I make a London Fog at home?

Absolutely! Making it at home is simple. Brew a strong cup of Earl Grey tea, steam or froth milk, add a dash of vanilla syrup, and voilà – you have a homemade London Fog ready to be enjoyed.

What type of milk is best for a London Fog?

The choice of milk is a matter of personal preference. Some prefer the richness of whole milk, while others opt for the creaminess of almond or oat milk. Experiment with different milk options to find the one that suits your taste.

Can I make it without vanilla syrup?

Certainly. While vanilla syrup adds a subtle sweetness to the drink, it’s not a mandatory ingredient. Some individuals prefer their London Fog without any added sweetness, allowing the natural flavors of the tea and milk to come through.

The London Fog is a comforting hot beverage that’s perfect for chillier weather. Sip it while curled up with a good book or before braving the cold outdoors. The cozy tea latte is sure to warm you up. Whether you’re sipping it in a bustling café, experimenting with variations at home, or enjoying a moment of tranquility, the London Fog invites you to savor the simple joy of a well-crafted drink.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make eggnog in advance?

Yes, you can prepare eggnog a day or two in advance. Keep it refrigerated, and give it a good stir before serving to maintain the creamy consistency.

Can I make a dairy-free version?

Absolutely! Substitute dairy with almond or coconut milk and use a non-dairy whipped topping for a vegan-friendly alternative.

Can I freeze leftover eggnog?

Freezing may alter the texture, so it’s not recommended. However, you can use leftover eggnog in recipes like pancakes, French toast, or custards.

Can kids drink it?

Absolutely, just leave out the hard liquor. Kids love sipping on the sweet, creamy, perfectly spiced non-alcoholic version.

How long does it last?

Homemade eggnog will keep fresh in the fridge for 2-3 days. Don’t store it at room temperature or the eggs may spoil. The alcohol content also helps preserved store-bought and homemade varieties.

What’s the best glass to serve it in?

For presentation, serve in glass punch cups, mugs or glasses with festive shaped rims. Shake in a cocktail shaker for extra froth before pouring.

How to Store Your Eggnog Creations

To preserve the freshness and flavor of your homemade eggnog, follow these storage tips:

Refrigeration- Keep refrigerated at all times, stored in an airtight container. Consume within 2-3 days for the best taste and quality. Alcoholic versions will last longer, for 1-2 weeks.

Avoid Freezing- Freezing may cause separation and affect the texture, so it’s best to enjoy your eggnog fresh.

Sealed Containers- To prevent the absorption of odors from the fridge, use a sealed container or cover the eggnog with plastic wrap.

When in Doubt, Throw Out- Discard if you notice curdling, bubbling or off smells.

Eggnog, with its creamy texture and nostalgic flavors, is a Christmas tradition that brings people together.
As the chilly winds start to blow and the holiday season approaches, there’s nothing quite like a warm, comforting drink to bring about that festive cheer. One such timeless classic that warms hearts and hands alike is Hot Buttered Rum. This warm and boozy holiday drink has a long history and is a favorite in many parts of the world.

Origins in the 17th Century

Hot buttered rum dates back to the 17th century when English sailors traveling to the Caribbean and East Indies grew fond of a local rum punch. They found that adding butter to the rum helped smooth out the drink’s harshness. When the sailors returned home to colder climates, they warmed up their buttered rum – and a new wintertime tradition was born!

Popularity in the American Colonies

In the American colonies, hot buttered rum became hugely popular in the 1700s. The colonists sweetened their rum with molasses or honey and topped it with a pat of butter. The drink provided warmth and cheer during the cold New England winters. Hot buttered rum parties were common amongst the upper classes of American society.

Over the years, Hot Buttered Rum has become a beloved beverage during the holiday season, particularly in North America and parts of Europe. It’s a go-to drink for Christmas gatherings, holiday parties, and cozy nights by the fireplace.

Regional Variations

While the basic ingredients of this drink remain consistent, recipes can vary across different regions and cultures.

New England Style- The traditional New England version involves dark rum, unsalted butter, maple syrup or honey, water, and a blend of baking spices like nutmeg, cinnamon, and cloves. This creates a warm, smooth, and slightly sweet buttered rum ideal for sipping on a cold winter’s night.

Caribbean Inspired- Caribbean twists on hot buttered rum use ingredients like coconut milk, allspice, vanilla, brown sugar, and occasionally a float of 151-proof rum set aflame for an extra kick. The coconut milk makes this version extra creamy and tropical.

Southern Comfort– Down south, bourbon often stands in for rum. A spoonful of peach preserves adds a hint of fruitiness. Southerners may also fold in a bit of orange juice or lemon juice to brighten up the flavor.

Hot Buttered Rum is a delightful holiday beverage that warms both the body and the soul. Whether you’re a seasoned enthusiast or trying it for the first time, these hints and tips will help you create the perfect cup of this classic drink.

Hints and Tips for Perfecting Your Hot Buttered Rum

Quality Ingredients Matter- Start with high-quality ingredients, especially when it comes to the rum. Opt for a good dark rum that has a rich and robust flavor, as it will greatly influence the taste of your Hot Buttered Rum.

Butter Wisely- Use unsalted, good-quality butter. It’s the key to that creamy, luscious texture.

Sweetness and Spice- Adjust the amount of brown sugar and spices to suit your taste. Some prefer a sweeter and spicier drink, while others like a milder flavor. Tailor it to your liking.

Whipped Cream Toppings- When garnishing with whipped cream, sprinkle a dash of cinnamon or nutmeg on top. It not only adds visual appeal but also enhances the aroma and taste.

For a Festive Flair– Garnish with cinnamon sticks or orange slices.

Experiment with Variations- Feel free to get creative with different variations by adding a splash of vanilla extract, a spoonful of pumpkin puree, or even a shot of espresso for an intriguing twist.

Pre-Warm the Mug- Warm the mug or glass you’ll be using before preparing the drink. A warm vessel keeps the beverage hot longer and enhances the overall experience.

Dissolve Sugar Properly- Ensure the brown sugar is thoroughly dissolved by stirring the mixture well. This ensures even sweetness throughout the drink.

Serve in Festive Mugs- Serve Hot Buttered Rum in festive or holiday-themed mugs to enhance the seasonal ambiance and make the experience even more enjoyable.

Accompany with Holiday Treats- Pair Hot Buttered Rum with seasonal treats like gingerbread cookies, shortbread, or spiced nuts for a delightful and harmonious flavor combination.

The holidays just wouldn’t be the same without a steaming mug of rich, creamy hot chocolate. As soon as the weather turns chilly, I start craving the sweet, chocolatey beverage that instantly makes everything feel more festive. The hot chocolate recipes included here begin with the basic recipe and include spiked variations. There is definitely something for everyone.

“Hot chocolate warms the soul like a good friend.” – Unknown

A History of Hot Chocolate

The first hot chocolate recipes can be traced back to the ancient Mayans and Aztecs, who roasted and ground cocoa beans for a bitter, spicy drink called xocolātl. The Spanish brought cocoa home after conquering the Aztecs in the 16th century, adding sugar to sweeten it. For years it was a luxury only royalty could afford.

Hot chocolate eventually spread to the rest of Europe, becoming fashionable in aristocratic circles in the 17th and 18th centuries. Parisian cafes and chocolatiers started selling more refined, velvety hot chocolate in the 19th century.

The drink became popular in America in the 1700s, with early recipes calling for chocolate shavings boiled in water. It was a favorite of Revolutionary War soldiers. Hot chocolate further edged its way into the American mainstream thanks to innovations like Dutch cocoa processing, milk chocolate, and instant cocoa powder.

Today it’s a wintertime staple, warming us body and soul no matter how the weather outside feels frightful!

Basic Hot Chocolate Recipe

This simple recipe makes approximately two mugs of classic hot chocolate. Feel free to double or triple it for a whole crew!

Ingredients

2 cups of milk (whole or plant-based)

2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder

2 tablespoons granulated sugar

Spiked Hot Chocolate

Adding a splash of liquor to hot chocolate is a delicious way to upgrade the classic winter drink. While hot chocolate on its own is creamy, sweet, and comforting, introducing alcohol brings in new complex flavors. The alcohol enhances the chocolate’s flavors and lends a sophisticated edge. The key is to not overdo it – just a small amount is all you need. About 1-2 ounces of liquor for a standard mug full of hot chocolate is plenty. This will allow the chocolate flavors to still come through while adding a subtle kick. The alcohol infusion also gives the drink a nice velvety texture.
